When my great, great grandfather William moved from Ireland to work in London in the late 1850s, his two surviving children by his second marriage, Jane (9) and Robert William (7), came with him, as did the older children, sons and daughters of Anna Roser (Hocter). Of these, Elizabeth (b 1839) emigrated to Tasmaniain 1860 at the age of 21, and married a Robert Ford there soon after arriving. In William's memoires he says Ford went off to the mines in New Zealand, leaving Elizabeth with their child, William Robert (b 1862), to follow. The family story is that she walked the length of New Zealand, sometimes knee-deep in snow, found Robert and they settled to farm near the Inch Clutha river, bringing up six more children. They were Anna Rosetta b 1864, Mary b 1866, Robert b 1868, John b 1871, Thos Henry b 1873, Elizabeth Jane b 1875.
Some time later, Jane (see above) also emigrated, to join her sister in New Zealand. She married a Scottish farmer, John Smith.
